People call them "rats with wings" - we think they deserve a better marketing team!
Did you know that pigeons are actually ridiculously intelligent?
Scientists have discovered that pigeons can recognise human faces, remember them for years, and even distinguish between different styles of art. Some studies suggest they're capable of solving surprisingly complex problems and can even recognise themselves in mirrors.
Meanwhile, some humans still forget where they left their keys.

Studies have shown pigeons can understand basic numerical concepts and can even learn to put numbers in order. Some researchers have suggested their abilities are similar to those of young children in certain tests.

Many pigeons form long term partnerships and raise multiple families together. They share parenting duties too, proving they're far more committed than many reality TV contestants.
🐦 Both Parents Produce "Pigeon Milk"
This sounds completely made up, but it's true. Both mum and dad pigeons produce a nutrient rich substance called crop milk to feed their chicks. Flamingos are one of the few other birds that do something similar.

Before telephones existed, pigeons were considered valuable working animals. Wealthy people, governments, newspapers, and businesses relied on them to carry messages quickly across long distances.

Only a handful of animals can recognise themselves in a mirror. Pigeons have demonstrated self recognition in scientific studies, putting them in surprisingly exclusive company.

Pigeons might look like they're just loafing around town centres, but they can reach impressive speeds in flight and cover huge distances in a single day.
🐦 Their Neck Feathers Aren't Actually Rainbow Coloured
That beautiful green, purple, blue, and pink shimmer comes from microscopic structures in their feathers that reflect light. They're basically walking holographic fashion accessories.
🐦 Baby Pigeons Are Real
You've probably seen thousands of pigeons and almost no babies. That's because pigeon chicks stay hidden in nests until they're nearly adult sized. This has led to one of the internet's favourite conspiracy theories: "Have you ever actually seen a baby pigeon?"

Long before Instagram, TikTok, or group chats, pigeons were delivering messages across countries.
Carrier pigeons have been used for thousands of years and played important roles during both World Wars. Some even received medals for bravery.
Imagine flying hundreds of miles carrying important information without GPS, snacks, or a charging cable.

All the pigeons wandering around our towns and cities are descendants of the wild Rock Dove. Humans domesticated them thousands of years ago and many of today's city pigeons are descendants of escaped pets and messenger birds.

Pigeons have survived predators, wars, industrialisation, city life, tourists with selfie sticks and generations of people calling them 'rats with wings'. If that's not alternative icon behaviour, we don't know what is.
